LEANDRO RAVETTI - How to Ensure Quality in The Production of EVOO

Leandro Ravetti graduated as an Agricultural Engineer in. He worked for the National Institute of Agricultural Technology in olive production research and advised many of the country’s largest olive developments from 1995 until he moved to Australia in 2001. Leandro has also studied and worked as an invited researcher at the Olive Growing Research Institute of Perugia, Italy and at different Governmental Olive Institutes in Andalusia, Spain where he completed a postgraduate degree on olive growing.

In Australia, Leandro leads the Modern Olives technical team, which provides horticultural and olive specific technical advice to most of the largest olive groves and olive oil processing plants in the country. Leandro has also been involved as adviser, researcher and invited speaker in most other new olive industries such as New Zealand, Japan, Peru, South Africa, Chile and USA.

Leandro has been Executive Director of Boundary Bend Limited, Australia’s leading fully integrated olive company since 2005. As part of his role with Boundary Bend, Leandro has overseen the production of multi award winning oils for the company’s flagship brand, Cobram Estate, including a large number of gold medals, best in class and best in show trophies in national and international competitions such as New York, Los Angeles, Olive Japan, Australian Olive Association, etc.

JIM ROWNTREE - Processing Options: 2 or 3 Phase?

Jim has been involved with the Australian olive industry since 1996 and has experience in all aspects of olive growing from grove design, installation, growing, harvesting, rejuvenation, and olive oil processing.  He runs his own 80 hectare super high density and traditional density olive groves near Coonalpyn SA as well as managing a nearby 214 hectare olive grove.   Jim was directly involved in the design and installation of over 500 ha of olives in the Limestone Coast region of SA and is a member of the AOA Chemical Permits Committee, an EVOO judge.  Jim consults for growers in the region and is passionate about increasing productivity.  

ANDREW ROBSON - Managing Australian Tree Crops by Remote Sensing

Associate Professor Andrew Robson has over 20 years’ experience in Agricultural research with the last 16 years developing remote sensing/ GIS applications across a number of farming systems both nationally and internationally. Andrew has been employed by both New South Wales and Queensland Departments of Primary Industry, and for the last three years has been a member of the University of New England’s Precision Agriculture Research Group (PARG), establishing the Agricultural Remote Sensing Team (ARST). Andrew has undertaken industry funded projects in Peanut, Grains, Cotton, Sugar, Rice, Avocados, Macadamias, Mangoes, Bananas, Vegetables, Pineapples and Pastures developing applications from satellite, airborne and field based technologies.

Will is the key industry contact in charge of the EVERYDAY Consumer Awareness Campaign.  He works closely with the Consumer Awareness & Education team to deliver a dynamic digital marketing campaign for the Australian Olive Industry.   Will and his team of 25 at FULLER has built a reputation as one of Australia’s finest wine and food marketing agencies working with businesses such as Yalumba, St Hallett, Viterra and PIRSA.  The FULLER team are increasingly passionate about connecting brands with consumers using digital content and storytelling.  A Barossa boy, who grew up pruning 100 year old vines in Winter, Will loves working with primary producers in regional communities.

DR JAMES UNDERWOOD - Intelligent Information Systems For Tree Crops

Dr. James Patrick Underwood is a senior research fellow at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at The University of Sydney. James is an international expert in the area of perception systems for field robotics. He has led a number of robotics and intelligent systems R&D projects in defence, mining and agriculture, and has consulted to industry including Rio Tinto, Bae Systems, The South Korean Agency for Defence Development, Leica Geosystems, Dairy Australia, Horticulture Innovation Australia and the South Australian Research and Development Institute.  Dr James Underwood is an international expert in the study of how outdoor robots operating in complex, unstructured environments can make sense of their world using multimodal sensing, data fusion and mapping 


Jacqui is a qualified dietitian and nutritionist and the Nutrition Strategy and Education Manager for Boundary Bend Olives. There she leads the health education program targeted at health care professionals and also provides nutrition advice for the AOA EVERYDAY Consumer Awareness Campaign. Before graduating as a dietitian, Jacqui worked as a Medical Scientist in Australia and the UK, and as an advisor to the Minister for Agriculture. As a dietitian Jacqui has worked in a variety of health care settings including public health nutrition, private practice, hospitals, community and food service. She is passionate about translating the science of nutrition into practical science-based information that is relevant for health care professionals and the public and educating people on healthy lifestyles to both prevent and live well with health conditions.

PETER McFARLANE - National EVOO Market Survey Results and TasteBook Update

Peter is the Principal of McFarlane Strategic Services, a horticulture industry consultancy specialising in strategic thinking, industry consultation, communications and organisational development.  Peter holds a Bachelor of Agriculture Science from the University of Melbourne, and has been consulting to the Australian olive industry since 2009, and in 2012 was the recipient of the AOA’s Service to Industry Award.  His current roles for the AOA include “Australian Olive Association (AOA) Code of Practice (OliveCare™) Administrator; Convenor of the AOA National Table Olive Committee and Chief Steward of the Australian Table Olive Awards; Convenor of the Agri-chemicals Committee, and AOA Biosecurity representative.  As Code Administrator Peter has managed the AOA national supermarket survey over the last 3 years, purchasing and commissioning laboratory testing of over 180 products labelled as extra virgin olive oil, funded through the Horticulture Innovation olive levy project OL13007 – Australian Olive Industry Code of Practice Implementation.  Peter is also Coordinator of the Tastebook sensory training initiative working with the AOA chief evoo judge Shane Cummins on an innovative industry program of appreciating, describing and understanding how to improve the quality of evoo and table olives.

PROF ROBERT SPOONER-HART - Using DNA and Other Methodologies for Improved Sustainable Management of Key Olive Pests

Associate Professor Dr Robert Spooner-Hart is Research Professor of Sustainable Plant Production Systems at Western Sydney University. He has worked in IPM research, development and extension in the horticulture industries for more than 35 years, including 20 years with the Australian olive industry.  He has been project leader on numerous national and international projects including 6 on olives.  He has published approximately 100 refereed journal articles and numerous industry articles, with a number on olives, including the Olive Pest and Disease Field Guide. He has regularly presented research findings and management advice to the Australian and international olive industries at conferences and workshops/field days.

STACY WORDSWORTH - Your Levy at Work - Communication Project

Stacey is a Group Account Director for Cox Inall Communications, and oversees the management of the Olive communication program. This program aims to effectively communicate the technologies and innovations resulting from industry levy investment in R&D projects to support adoption and a more profitable Australian supply chain.

Stacey is an experienced journalist and communications professional with nearly two decades in print and broadcast media, political advocacy and public relations. She has led significant communications strategies for the rural sector including the development and implementation of state and federal election strategies for agricultural advocacy groups.

Cox Inall Communications will share the preliminary findings of the first round of a survey designed for growers and processors which aims to determine how to best disseminate R&D project information to the industry.
